The Refuge Trail at Tioga State Forest near Wellsboro, Pennsylvania is an easy 0.7-mile out-and-back trail that connects Painter Leetonia Road to the West Rim Trail (WRT).
This short and easy trail does not have much to see, but hikers and backpackers can use this trail as a way to hike into the West Rim Trail just south of Four Mile Run creek.
Upon reaching the WRT (orange blazes), hikers will notice the WRT heads straight to continue hiking south along the PA Grand Canyon / Pine Creek Gorge. Taking a right-hand turn at the first junction of the WRT will bring hikers back to Painter Leetonia Road out next to the Seimons Trail.
Parking
Hikers will find a parking turnout at the trailhead, which is large enough to fit about four vehicles. The parking turnout is just off to the side of this hairpin turn on the road, so make sure not to block any logging trucks' way.
Pets
Dogs are allowed if leashed.
Blaze Color
This trail follows yellow blazes.
Prohibited
No biking. No horseback riding.
Winter Road Conditions
Tioga State Forest does not maintain this road during the
winter. Do not attempt driving on this road without proper equipment
including snow tires and/or chains unless the road is clear. High wind
storms may also cause trees to fall across the road, making the road
impassible. If you plan to visit during the winter, plan accordingly.
MyHikes is an indie web platform aimed to make exploring public trails easier for everyone. The site has no investors and is owned and operated by one person, Dave Miller (Founder & Admin). As the Founder, main contributor, and doer-of-all-things for MyHikes, I share my trips with over-detailed write-ups for fun on a volunteer basis and I believe that public trail information should be available to everyone.
It takes a lot of time 🕦, money 💰, and effort (including espresso shots ☕) to run MyHikes, including hiking , mapping , writing , and publishing new trails with high-quality content... along with building new features, moderating, site maintainance, and app development for iOS and Android . I simply ask that if you find MyHikes' trail guides helpful to please consider becoming a Supporter to help keep the site, iOS, and Android apps available to everyone.
Supporters unlock website and in-app perks with a one-time payment of $25 (you renew) 😎👍. Or you can simply make a Donation of your choice without a MyHikes user account. Otherwise, telling your friends about MyHikes is the next-best thing - both quick and free 🎉
